ENGLISH AT WARWICK
In the Sixth Form, we offer two A Level subjects: OCR A Level English Literature and AQA A Level English Language. Our experienced teaching team deliver a rich and challenging curriculum, drawing on their outstanding subject knowledge. Through lessons centred around discussion and debate, there are plenty of opportunities for pupils to develop critical thinking skills, to find their voice and to grapple with academic schools of thought. We are proud to offer rigorous support and experienced advice for pupils applying for English at university.
A Level Language
AQA English Language (7702)
Studying AQA A Level English Language enables pupils to understand the power of language and how that power is exercised in both writing and speech. Pupils will gain a range of insights into language and society through the study of topics such as language evolution; how children learn to speak and write; how the language use varies around the UK and across the globe and even how we use language to index our identity.
Pupils are taught the skills needed to analyse a variety of discourses in depth and are encouraged to engage with a range of media to help them comprehend how English continues to change.
The specification requires pupils to produce a coursework portfolio of two written tasks, including creative writing inspired by texts they have encountered during the course, which is worth 20% of the total mark.
In English, pupils’ talents find many outlets. Beyond the classroom, our A level pupils have the opportunity to participate in the Warwickshire Essay and the Warwickshire Voices Competition, where they attend a series of seminars before submitting a critical essay or original creative writing in response to an annual theme. Pupils also benefit from theatre trips, lectures, screenings, clinics and opportunities to lead in the department and share their enthusiasm for English with younger pupils.
For pupils who love ideas and who find themselves questioning what makes a storyline powerful, a quotation strangely comforting, or a line memorable then English is them. Our A level courses challenge our pupils, but they also reward them with a lifelong appreciation of language and art.
