ART & DESIGN AT WARWICK
Indeed Creativity is one of the core tenets of the school’s Values and fostering this basic human urge by studying Art is not only satisfying but also endlessly rewarding. A sure sign of how well Art is supported at Warwick School is just how much of it adorns the walls, corridors and classrooms in the school. It is everywhere and shows the pupils’ infinite, joyful curiosity, sense of experimentation, skillful use of materials and, importantly, creativity.
Many pupils study the subject through GCSE, through A Level and beyond either directly with foundation courses at top Universities or indirectly through related subjects such as Architecture, Product design or Advertising. Pupils often submit work to local competitions and exhibitions through Warwick and beyond and enjoy a great deal of success in both.
Course Specification – A level
At the highest levels of Art in school, A-Level, students will be encouraged to work independently and discover their own individual creative directions. Students have a dedicated 6th form Art studio with access to equipment and resources in a range of disciplines.
A-level students are expected to complete two components; Component 1 (coursework), and component 2 (externally set assignment – exam). Students are also required to complete a 1000 – 3000 word essay that contributes directly to component 1 but does not get a separate mark.
Students are taught advanced skills, techniques and processes while at the same time being strongly encouraged to become independent and to develop a personal and original style.
Students typically spend the first term of the year exploring short tasks or projects, developing new skills and experiences. After a one to one tutorial, students discuss and develop their own approach to their coursework putting forward their own proposal for what they want to investigate and the starting points for their work. Throughout the course students will be expected to contribute to group critiques and presentations, sharing opinions and supporting each other in their creative practices. Each student will be allocated a working space that students can use as a studio space throughout the year. As part of the course students will be encouraged to view and experience Art works first hand in galleries. Students will be given feedback and support on a one to one basis and will typically produce work in a portfolio, depending on individual needs and projects. At the end of the year students will be expected to take a key role in their own display of work for moderation and exhibition.
Assessment for A Level comprises a coursework portfolio (60%) and an externally set assignment taken at the end or the course (40%). Work is internally marked and externally moderated by AQA exam board upon completion.
