We believe it is important for all pupils to experience a wide range of programming approaches and to develop a strong understanding of how computing systems work. Alongside this, pupils build essential digital skills in analysing information, reporting findings, and presenting their work confidently and effectively.
The computing department, based in the Masefield Centre, is supported by three general computer laboratories and a dedicated specialist lab for GCSE and A Level study. Lessons are practical, engaging, and hands-on, enabling pupils to explore key concepts in real time and apply theory through meaningful experience.
Our curriculum builds strong foundations in Years 7–9 and prepares pupils for success at GCSE and beyond. Through an engaging programme of study, boys develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy the subject and achieve their potential.

Year 7 – 9
In Years 7 and 8, pupils follow a curriculum adapted from the strongest elements of the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) framework. This ensures a broad, balanced, and modern introduction to computing, while also allowing flexibility to respond to pupils’ interests and emerging technologies.
In Year 7, pupils have one computing lesson each week, supported by a further IT lesson each fortnight. Lessons focus on developing confidence with digital systems, problem-solving, and core computational ideas.
In Year 8, pupils continue with one lesson of computing per week and build on their understanding through topics such as computational thinking and logic, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and an introduction to programming using Python.
In Year 9, pupils have two lessons per week and develop their programming skills in greater depth. The course introduces data handling using Python, alongside cybersecurity and data representation. Computing is an optional subject in Year 9 and may be continued through GCSE.

GCSE
Pearson Edexcel Computer Science (1CP2) is offered at GCSE, providing pupils with opportunities to develop strong practical programming skills alongside a secure theoretical understanding of computer science principles. The course combines rigorous academic content with applied problem-solving and programming.
Teaching is supported by practical activities wherever possible, making use of desktop computers and our networked resources. The course prepares pupils for further study in Computer Science and supports the development of logical thinking, creativity, independence, and resilience.
