Art is introduced to all pupils from Year 7, with many going onto study and GCSE and A Level and beyond.
Year 7 – 9
The art department’s works to build confidence and enjoyment in lessons, developing pupils’ skills and techniques in a range of disciplines, and engendering a sense of discovery in the world around them. At whatever stage pupils leave the art department, they will all have an appreciation and understanding of the value and contribution that art gives to society and individuals. In Key Stage 3, we provide a well-rounded experience of a variety of disciplines, including drawing, painting, ceramics, digital and mixed media.
Projects will introduce pupils to a range of artists and cultures, past and present, asking pupils to find inspiration in the work of others.
GCSE
At GCSE, pupils will continue to build and develop practical skills while delving more in depth to the critical contextual side of art, making works that are increasingly more individual and personal.
We follow the AQA Art, Craft & Design qualification for GCSE, where pupils have a wide range of opportunities to work in different media and styles.
Assessment for GCSE comprises of a production of a coursework portfolio (60%) and an externally set assignment taken at the end or the course (40%). Work is internally marked and externally moderated by the exam board upon completion.
Pupils typically work in large A1 portfolio format with pieces and outcomes alongside their projects. The course is structured in such a way that pupils learn to become more independent and have an increasing choice in the direction of their work as they progress.
At the end of the course, students’ work is celebrated in our annual summer Art Gala event with private view event and open exhibition in the Warwick Hall foyer and gallery space.
